Great Lakes Forecasting

Great Lakes Beach Association – An organization made up of regional states, universities, groups and agencies, whose goal is to pursue healthy beach water conditions.

Great Lakes Coastal Forecasting System – A system used by LE HAB bulletin that utilizes various computer models to forecast Great Lakes factors such as currents, temperatures and water level fluctuations.

Great Lakes Information Network Beachcast – A tool of the Great Lakes Information Network that provides information about Great Lakes beach advisories, weather, human health risks and more.

Harmful Algal Blooms Data and Products – NOAA’s Center for Excellence for Great Lakes and Human Health’s data about harmful algal blooms forecasted in LE HAB.

Journal of Great Lakes Research – A peer-reviewed, scientific journal focused on Great Lakes research.

Lake Erie Harmful Algal Bloom Bulletin (LE HAB) – An experimental, weekly bulletin that forecasts Microcystis blooms in western Lake Erie.

Managing the Impact of Multiple Stressors in Saginaw Bay –  A current CILER-supported project that investigates the effect of stressors, such as invasive species and overfishing, and how they affect the Saginaw Bay ecosystem.

NOAA Center for Excellence for Great Lakes and Human Health (CEGLHH) – An arm of NOAA that focuses on harmful algal blooms, beach closures and water quality and how they relate to the Great Lakes and human health.

NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory – A federal facility that performs ecosystem-based research in the Laurentian Great Lakes region.

NOAA Lake Michigan Field Station – A GLERL facility located on the shore of Lake Michigan.

 

Observing Systems

CoastWatch – A program that gathers, produces and delivers environmental data to organizations  and stakeholders like the Coast Guard and National Weather Service via satellite.

Great Lakes Observing System – GLOS is a project aimed to provide online, real-time and historical data about Great Lakes biology, chemistry, geology and cultural resources.

Great Lakes WATER Institute (GLWI) – A Great Lakes research facility based out of University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s School of Freshwater Sciences.

Great Lakes Urban Coastal Observing System (GLUCOS) – An underwater observatory being developed by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Great Lakes WATER Institute that measures various physical, chemical and biological processes in Lake Michigan.

NOAA’s Oceans & Human Health Research Initiative – A federal initiative that aims to improve understanding and management of U.S. oceans, coasts and the Great Lakes.

 

Invasive Species

Great Lakes Aquatic Nonindigenous Species Information System (GLANSIS) – A regional node of the USGS nonindigenous aquatic species database.

Lake Ontario Lower Aquatic (LOLA) Food Web Study – A 2003 assessment that aimed to evaluate the status and develop long-term recommendations for the assessment of the lower aquatic food web of Lake Ontario.

USGS Aquatic Nonindigenous Species Database – A database for nondigenous aquatic species in the U.S.

 

Protection and Restoration of Resources

Great Lakes Area of Concern – Locations in the Great Lakes that don’t meet standards set by the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.

Great Lakes Restoration Initiative – Tthe largest federal investment in the Great Lakes in two decades that aims to clean\ up toxics and areas of concern; combat invasive species; promote nearshore health by protecting watersheds from polluted run-off; restore wetlands and other habitats; and work with partners on outreach.

 

Integrated Assessment

ECOFORE –  A project that aims to test and apply various models to predict how different environmental stressors affect or are affected by hypoxia formation in Lake Erie’s central basin.

 

Education and Outreach

Great Lakes Ocean Sciences Bowl – A regional competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl that tests teams of high school students on the subjects of math and science and its relation to the Great Lakes.

National Ocean Sciences Bowl – A national competition for high school students focused on ocean-related topics.
