Dr. Donna Kashian
November 28 , 2007

Dr. Donna Kashian, School of Natural Resources and Environment, is the principal investigator leading the Fish Consumption Advisories Project. The goal of this project is to develop an integrated assessment that will review the causes, consequences, and correctives for contamination on the Detroit River. Her work will provide technical guidance in implementing policy and management options to protect the health and safety of the people who fish on the Detroit River, the ecosystems that houses them, and the economy that depends on fishing.

Dr. Kashian's research for the Fish Consumption Advisories Project focuses on food-web systems and the relationship between feeding patterns and PCB body-burdens on fish. She coordinates and facilitates stakeholder meetings with the goal of advancing the connection between science, policy-makers, and citizens.

The first Fish Consumption Advisories Project workshop, held on November 13 and organized by Dr. Kashian, was very successful. The workshop united stakeholder interests and expertise with a scientific assessment of drivers of fish consumption advisories in the Detroit River. It also facilitated networking and information sharing and fostered a greater shared understanding of the issues associated with water contamination in the Detroit River.

Dr. Kashian's research is driven by her belief in the need to promote the importance of the interrelationships between earth system processes, biota, human systems, and contaminants.
