The Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystems Research (CILER), administered by the University of Michigan, announces the 2009 Great Lakes Summer Student Fellowship Program. The 2009 program is hosted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) and Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) Great Lakes Science Center and the International Joint Commission.

We seek to fill twenty-three (23) full-time, twelve-week positions. Preference is given to currently enrolled or just-graduated undergraduates, although graduate student applications will also be considered. Successful applicants will receive a stipend of $5,750 for the twelve-week fellowship. The start dates for these positions are either 04-May or 08-June, although alternative schedules may be permitted.

This fellowship program provides students with an exciting opportunity to conduct research in the Great Lakes region under the mentorship of an individual scientist or professional. Summer fellowships are available in a broad range of fields including Aquatic Ecology, Outreach and Communications, Maritime Archaeology, Data Analysis, Modeling, Marine Instrumentation, Fisheries, Oceanography, and Wetland Ecology. Most fellows will be located at NOAA-GLERL in Ann Arbor, Michigan as guest students of the University of Michigan; a few fellows will be located at other sites, including the USGS Great Lakes Science Center (Ann Arbor, MI), the NOAA Lake Michigan Field Station (Muskegon, MI), and the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary (Alpena, MI).

As part of this opportunity, fellows will give an oral presentation at the end of their fellowship period. In addition, University credit for the experience may be arranged through your home institution. Details for obtaining university credit will be provided with acceptance letters.

Fellows will need to cover the cost of their housing for the summer, although assistance will be provided for Ann Arbor fellows in finding affordable summer housing options.
